What is executive coaching
and who is it intended for?

Executive coaching is the fastest-growing segment of the coaching market. But who is it really for and what can you expect from it?

Executive coaching: a meeting between a manager and a coach

What is executive coaching?

Executive coaching is a form of professional coaching focused on leaders, managers and key individuals in organisations. The aim is not therapy or counselling. It is a structured conversation that helps the client think, decide and act more effectively.

Unlike mentoring, where the more experienced advises the less experienced, a coach does not provide advice. They help the client find their own answers through targeted questions.

Who is executive coaching for?

The name 'executive' may sound exclusive, but in reality it is intended for a wider group:

  • CEOs and business owners - strategic thinking, isolation at the top, handing over the business
  • Middle management - transition to a senior role, team leadership, communication with top management
  • Future leaders - talent programmes, preparation for leadership positions
  • Women in senior management - glass ceiling, building authority, work-life integration
  • Startup founders - transition from founder to CEO, scaling, burnout
💡 A Harvard Business Review study shows that 48% of CEOs feel lonely at the top. Executive coaching is one of the few places where they can speak openly without political consequences.

How does executive coaching take place?

Typical collaboration lasts 6-12 months with a frequency of 2 sessions per month (each 60-90 minutes). It begins with diagnostics: the coach identifies the starting situation, goals and context. Individual sessions focused on specific topics then take place.

Many executive coaches also work with 360° feedback, gathering assessments from colleagues, subordinates and superiors. This gives the client an objective view of how they are perceived by others.

Why do companies pay for executive coaching?

Companies pay for executive coaching as a benefit for key managers for one simple reason: ROI. A MetrixGlobal study proved the average return on investment in executive coaching. 529 %Better decision-making by key personnel has a direct impact on company results.

How to choose an executive coach?

For executive coaching, we recommend coaches with ICF PCC or MCC certification and at least 5 years of experience. Their own business background is also important: a coach who has never led a team will find it difficult to coach the CEO of a multinational company.
